As the politicians start their final sprint to the November 7th elections, YOU can actually take steps toward slicing through the BS that's already started flying fast and furious. By now it should be a given that the least worthy politicians are the ones who can afford to spend the most to get your vote -- the money is either coming from special interests that they will have to pay back with favors once in office, or it's their own which means they have no connection to the common men and women they purport to represent. Of course, the most honest politicos (not actually honest, just more honest...) can't afford as many ads and endorsements. But in this age of the internet, the one thing they ALL have in common is a website. So do the little bit of work you need to if you want to try to figure out who deserves your vote: go through the ballot and visit each and every candidates' website. If there is no clear message from them there, discount them and move on. Of the sites that do carry clear, concise thoughts on the issues, how many attack the other candidates? Discount those and move on. Of the ones that are left (if there ARE any left), pick the one with the least amount of advertising and endorsements (aka special interest group identifiers) and place your vote. Then do the same with any ballot measures, using the same standards.
While this method is hardly foolproof, we've been putting enough fools in office using the old methods long enough. And if the method turns out to be a big mistake, don't worry -- you'll have a chance to correct it next election.
